Wheel Balancing vs Wheel Alignment: Which Does Your Car Need?

Wheel balancing and wheel alignment are often mentioned together, but they address different problems.

Wheel balancing corrects an uneven distribution of mass in a rotating wheel-and-tyre assembly. Wheel alignment concerns the angles at which the wheels are positioned relative to the vehicle and the road.

Choosing the correct service starts with identifying the symptoms and checking for damaged or worn components.

What happens during wheel balancing?

A technician mounts the wheel-and-tyre assembly on a balancing machine. The machine identifies imbalance, allowing the technician to fit suitable weights in the required positions.

Balancing is commonly carried out when new tyres are fitted or when a wheel has been repaired.

What are the signs of an unbalanced wheel?

A common symptom is vibration that becomes noticeable at particular road speeds. Depending on which wheel is affected, the vibration may be felt through the steering wheel, seat or vehicle body.

However, vibration can also result from a damaged tyre, bent wheel, worn suspension component or another fault. Balancing should not be treated as a guaranteed cure without an inspection.

How is wheel alignment different?

Wheel alignment involves measuring and, where the vehicle permits, adjusting wheel angles against the manufacturer’s specifications.

Incorrect alignment can contribute to uneven tyre wear or a vehicle that does not track straight. Worn suspension parts, tyre problems and road conditions can produce similar symptoms, so these should be checked as part of the diagnosis.

Should I book balancing after hitting a pothole?

If you notice new vibration after a pothole impact, have the wheel and tyre inspected for damage. A bent rim, tyre bulge or damaged suspension component needs attention before balancing or alignment can be considered an adequate solution.

Do not continue driving on a visibly damaged tyre.

Does every wheel need balancing at a fixed mileage?

There is no universal mileage interval that applies to every car. Balancing is normally considered when tyres are fitted, a wheel-and-tyre assembly is disturbed or symptoms suggest an imbalance.

Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and investigate new vibrations promptly.
