What the MOT history shows

  • The result of every MOT since 2005, with the date
  • Advisories, minor and major defects found at each test
  • The mileage at each test, so you can spot a reading that went down
  • When the next MOT is due

What it doesn't show

  • Accidents, insurance write-offs or outstanding finance
  • The service history or repairs done between MOTs
  • Whether advisories have been fixed since the test
  • Anything the tester couldn't see on the day

Buying a used car? What to look for in its MOT history

  • The same advisory year after year, such as corrosion or a worn suspension part. It often means the work was never done.
  • Mileage that goes down, or barely moves for years. Ask the seller why.
  • Long gaps between tests. The car may have been off the road for a while.
  • A fail and a pass on the same day is normal: the faults were put right at the test. Repeated fails for the same item are worth asking about.
  • Advisories at the last test. Plan for them, or ask the seller to have them fixed before you buy.

An MOT doesn’t check the engine, the gearbox or the service history. A pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic covers what the MOT doesn’t.

Questions about the MOT history check

Is the MOT history check free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and nothing to pay. Enter a reg and the results show straight away.

Where does the information come from?

From the DVSA MOT history, the same record that GOV.UK uses. We read it when you check and keep it for an hour at most.

What is an MOT advisory?

Something the tester noticed that isn't bad enough to fail the MOT yet, such as worn brake pads or a tyre close to the legal limit. Advisories usually need doing soon, before they turn into fails.

Can you remind me before the MOT is due?

Yes. After the check, press Remind me and enter your email, and your mobile if you want texts. We remind you 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before the MOT is due. It’s free and you can stop at any time.

Can I get the advisories fixed through Hon Car Service?

Yes. After the check, add your postcode and we put the usual repairs in your basket with a fixed price for your car. You see the price before you book, and your mechanic checks the car before doing any work.
