An MOT is a test of a vehicle’s road safety and environmental standards at the time of inspection. For most cars in Great Britain, it becomes a legal requirement when the vehicle reaches three years old and is then needed every year.
An MOT is not the same as a car service. It checks whether a vehicle meets specified standards, but it does not replace routine maintenance or guarantee that the car will remain safe for the next 12 months.
What happens during an MOT?
An approved MOT tester examines safety-related parts of the vehicle, including its braking system, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, seat belts and body structure. Petrol and diesel vehicles also undergo emissions checks where applicable.
The tester records any defects using the MOT classification system:
- Minor: A defect that does not cause the vehicle to fail, but should be repaired.
- Major: A defect that causes an MOT failure and needs repairing.
- Dangerous: A defect that causes an MOT failure and means the vehicle must not be driven until the problem is fixed.
A vehicle can also receive advisories for issues that are not serious enough to fail the test but may need attention in future.
Does a new car need an MOT?
Most new cars in Great Britain need their first MOT by the third anniversary of their registration. Different rules can apply to certain vehicles, including taxis and ambulances.
Northern Ireland has separate testing arrangements, so drivers should check the rules that apply where their vehicle is registered.

You can check your vehicle’s MOT status and test history using its registration number on the official GOV.UK MOT history service .
You can normally have an MOT carried out up to one month minus one day before its expiry date without changing the existing annual renewal date.
What should I do before my MOT?
A few simple checks may help you identify problems before the test:
- Check that your headlights, indicators, brake lights and number plate lights work.
- Inspect your tyres for damage and uneven wear.
- Make sure the windscreen is clear and the wipers and washers work properly.
- Check that the horn works and that the seat belts fasten correctly.
- Make sure the registration plates are clean, legible and securely fitted.
Do not wait for your MOT if you notice a safety problem. A vehicle must be roadworthy whenever it is used on the road.
What happens if my car fails?
The test result will identify the defects found. You will need to arrange the necessary repairs and, where required, a retest.
A failed MOT does not automatically mean that every recommended repair is part of the test failure. Ask the garage to explain which items caused the failure, which are advisories and what work is needed to make the vehicle safe.
