Engine Management Light and MOT: What Drivers Need to Know

The engine management light, often shown as an engine-shaped symbol on the dashboard, indicates that the vehicle has detected a problem associated with an engine or emissions-related system.

The light does not identify a particular failed component. A diagnostic investigation is needed to establish why it has appeared.

Can the engine management light cause an MOT failure?

For vehicles to which the relevant MOT requirement applies, an engine malfunction indicator lamp that indicates a malfunction can result in a major defect and an MOT failure.

The applicable inspection requirements depend on the vehicle’s age, fuel type and other specifications. If your light is on before the test, arrange a diagnosis rather than assuming the vehicle will pass.

Why might the light come on?

Possible causes include faults involving ignition, fuel delivery, sensors or emissions-control components. The cause may be relatively straightforward or require more extensive investigation.

A fault code can help direct the diagnosis, but it does not always prove that the component named in the code needs replacing.

For example, a code relating to an oxygen sensor may require checks of wiring, exhaust leaks or fuel-system operation before a repair is selected.

Is a flashing engine management light different?

Will clearing the fault code solve the problem?

Clearing a code does not repair the underlying fault. The light may return once the vehicle detects the problem again.

A proper repair involves identifying the cause, correcting it and checking that the system operates as intended.

Should I book my MOT before the repair?

If the warning light is already illuminated, diagnosing it before the MOT may help you avoid a failure and an additional appointment. Other defects can still be found during the test, so repairing the warning-light fault does not guarantee a pass.
