If your MOT has expired, do not continue using your car for ordinary journeys. For vehicles that require an MOT, driving without a valid test is generally unlawful.

There are limited exceptions, including travel to a pre-arranged MOT test or certain pre-arranged repairs. Those exceptions do not allow you to drive an unsafe vehicle.

My MOT expired yesterday. Can I drive to work?

No. An expired MOT does not come with a grace period for everyday driving. Arrange a test and make alternative travel plans until the vehicle can lawfully be used again.

Can I drive to a booked MOT appointment?

A journey to a pre-arranged MOT test may be permitted even when the previous MOT has expired, provided the vehicle meets the other legal requirements for that journey.

Keep your appointment details available, make sure the vehicle is insured and do not drive it if it is unsafe. If you are uncertain whether the car is roadworthy, arrange transport or recovery instead.

What if my car fails while its old MOT is still valid?

A previous certificate’s expiry date does not make an unsafe car legal to drive. The defects recorded in the new test result matter.

A dangerous defect means the vehicle must not be driven until repaired. A major defect also requires repair, and you must not use the vehicle if its condition makes it unroadworthy.

Ask the testing centre to explain the failure and how the vehicle can be moved safely.

Can I leave a car with an expired MOT on the road?

Do not assume that a car can remain on a public road simply because you are not driving it. If you plan to keep the vehicle off the road, check the rules on vehicle tax, insurance and making a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

A vehicle declared SORN must be kept off public roads except where a permitted journey applies.

Does an MOT automatically make my car roadworthy?

No. A car can develop a dangerous fault after passing its MOT. You remain responsible for its condition between tests.

If you notice severe brake problems, a damaged tyre, defective steering or another safety-critical fault, deal with it immediately rather than waiting for the next MOT.
