The terms cambelt and timing belt refer to the same component. A timing chain performs a similar job but is made differently and may have different maintenance requirements.

Both systems help keep the crankshaft and camshaft movements synchronised so the engine’s valves open and close at the correct points in its operating cycle.

A problem with this timing can prevent the engine from running correctly. In some engine designs, a belt or chain failure can also cause extensive internal damage.

Timing belts and timing chains are not interchangeable

A timing belt is a reinforced toothed belt. Depending on the engine, it may run behind protective covers or operate within an oil-lubricated system.

A timing chain is made from metal links and generally runs inside the engine, using guides and a tensioning system to maintain the correct position.

Neither design is automatically maintenance-free. What matters is the particular engine fitted to your vehicle and the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions.

How do I find out which system my car uses?

Do not rely on the vehicle badge or model name alone. Different engine versions within the same model range may use different timing systems.

Check the vehicle handbook, manufacturer’s maintenance information or ask a garage to identify the system using your registration and engine details.

If you have bought a used car, look for evidence of previous timing-system work in its service history. A verbal assurance that a belt was changed is less useful than an invoice showing the date, mileage and work completed.

When should a cambelt be replaced?

Follow the replacement interval specified for your particular engine. Manufacturers may set a time limit, a mileage limit or both.

A car that covers relatively few miles can still reach its belt replacement deadline because the belt and associated components age over time. Conversely, a high-mileage vehicle may reach its mileage limit well before the time limit.

If the maintenance history is incomplete, have the correct schedule checked rather than assuming the belt has plenty of life left.

Do timing chains ever need replacing?

Yes, although a chain may not have the same routine replacement schedule as a belt. Chain wear, tensioner problems, damaged guides and lubrication issues can all affect the timing system.

A rattling noise on start-up, an engine warning light, poor running or timing-related fault codes may justify an inspection. These symptoms can have other causes, so they should not be treated as proof that the chain needs replacing.

Why might a garage recommend additional parts?

A timing-belt job may involve tensioners, pulleys and, on some engines, a water pump driven by the belt. Replacing related components during the same repair can avoid repeating substantial labour later, but the correct parts and scope depend on the engine.

Ask for an itemised quotation that identifies the belt or chain work, associated components and any coolant or oil required.

What if I suspect a timing-system failure?

If the engine stops unexpectedly or makes a severe new mechanical noise, do not repeatedly attempt to restart it. Arrange recovery and diagnosis. Restarting an engine with a failed timing system may worsen internal damage.
