Bookings
You enter your reg and postcode, pick the work you need, choose a time slot, and pay — all online. We match you with a vetted local mechanic who comes to your home, workplace, or wherever your car is parked.
The whole booking takes about 2 minutes. The mechanic arrives at your chosen time with the parts and tools needed.
See the full process →We currently cover most of England, with growing coverage in Scotland and Wales. The fastest way to check is to enter your postcode on our homepage — if we have a mechanic in your area, you'll see a quote in seconds. If not, we'll let you know and add you to the waitlist for when we expand.
You can book a slot up to 6 months ahead. Most popular slots are within the next 2 weeks. Same-day bookings are sometimes available depending on mechanic availability in your area.
Yes. You can reschedule or cancel from your dashboard up to 24 hours before your scheduled slot with no fee. Inside the 24-hour window, a fee may apply (we pay it to the mechanic who's already blocked out that time for you).
For urgent changes, message your mechanic directly through your booking page — most can accommodate small time shifts on the day.
Mechanics are required to update you if they're going to be more than 15 minutes late. You'll get a push notification and/or SMS with the new ETA. If they don't show up within an hour of the agreed time and haven't been in touch, contact us and we'll either reschedule with another mechanic or refund the booking.
The mechanic needs roughly the space of a small van next to your car, on a flat, hard surface (driveway, hardstanding, or quiet residential street). Some jobs (clutch, engine work) require more space and need to be on a driveway or off-street parking — we'll flag this when you book if it's needed.
If you're in a flat or apartment block without parking, get in touch before booking — we can usually still help, but the mechanic may need to know about restrictions.
Not the whole time, but the mechanic will need access to the car and the keys at the start. If you can't be there, you can leave the keys in a safe place (or with a neighbour) and we'll text you photos when the work is done. Many of our customers leave for work after the mechanic arrives.
Payments & refunds
You get a fixed price upfront before booking. No diagnosis fees, no hidden charges, no surprises on the day. The price you see includes labour, parts, and our warranty.
Typical jobs start from around £45 (basic checks) to £600+ (clutch replacement). Use our homepage quote tool with your reg to see the exact price for your car.
See service prices →Your card is charged when you book. We hold the payment securely with Stripe until the job is completed — the mechanic only gets paid out after they've finished the work and you've confirmed it's done.
If the job is cancelled before it starts, your money is refunded automatically.
We accept all major UK debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Payments are processed by Stripe, who handle billions of pounds of UK transactions a year.
Klarna and Clearpay (pay in instalments) are coming soon for larger jobs.
If you cancel before the job starts, refunds are automatic and arrive within 3–5 working days. If you're unhappy with the work after it's done, contact us through your dashboard — we'll investigate and either send a mechanic back at no charge, or refund the affected portion.
Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 always apply.
Read the complaints procedure →Invoices are emailed to you immediately after payment. You can also download them any time from the booking detail page in your dashboard. We provide HMRC-compliant invoices suitable for personal or business expense claims.
Mechanics & repairs
Yes. Every mechanic on Hon is checked before they can take their first job. We verify:
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Public liability insurance of at least £2m
- 5+ years of professional experience
- References from past employers or customers
- Right-to-work check and identity verification
Mechanics also need to maintain a 4.5★ average rating from customers to stay on the platform.
If you've worked with a Hon mechanic before and want them again, you can request them when you book — we'll prioritise them if they're available in your slot. We can't always guarantee a specific mechanic, especially for urgent bookings, but we do our best.
By default we use OEM-spec or OEM-equivalent parts from trusted brands (Bosch, Brembo, ZF, NGK, etc.). These match what the manufacturer would fit and carry their standard manufacturer warranty.
If you'd prefer genuine OEM parts (the exact part with the manufacturer's logo), we can usually source them — there's typically a price difference. Just let your mechanic know when they arrive.
Most common repairs can be done on your driveway. A few jobs need a workshop (engine internals, major body work, alignment, MOT itself). If the mechanic finds something during a visit that they can't safely complete on-site, they'll explain the situation and recommend next steps — often a partner garage we trust.
You'll only ever be charged for work the mechanic was able to complete.
Yes. Book a diagnostic visit — the mechanic will inspect, run an OBD-II scan, and explain what's wrong. They'll give you a fixed quote for the repair, which you can choose to go ahead with on the same visit (if the parts are available) or book in for later.
Diagnostic visits start from £49.
After the job is completed, you'll get a short email asking for a star rating and a comment. Reviews appear on the mechanic's profile and help other customers pick. If something went wrong, please tell us before leaving a low review — we want a chance to put it right.
Warranty
Every job is covered by our 12-month workmanship warranty. If something we did fails because of how it was done, we'll fix it free of charge. Parts we supplied are covered by their manufacturer's warranty (typically 12–24 months) — and we handle the claim with the manufacturer for you.
See the full warranty terms →The warranty doesn't cover wear and tear, damage from accidents or misuse, unrelated faults that develop later, parts you supplied yourself, or work done by another garage after our visit.
See the exclusions →Open your booking in the dashboard and click "Report an issue". Tell us what's happening, when it started, and add photos if helpful. We'll come back within 1 working day with next steps — usually a free return visit from the original mechanic.
The workmanship warranty stays with the car for the full 12 months, regardless of who owns it. The new owner can claim under it — they just need to quote your booking reference. The parts warranty is also typically transferable (depends on the manufacturer).
Account & data
You can browse and get a quote without an account. To complete a booking we'll create an account with your email and a password — this lets you track the booking, message your mechanic, and access your invoice and warranty info later.
Click "Forgot password" on the sign-in page. We'll email you a link to set a new one. The link expires after 30 minutes for security.
Your personal data is stored on UK/EU servers, encrypted at rest and in transit. Payment details are handled exclusively by Stripe — we never see or store your card number. We don't sell your data to third parties.
Read the privacy policy →Go to Account settings → Delete account, or email privacy@honcarservice.co.uk. We'll delete your personal data within 30 days. Booking records linked to your account (which we're legally required to keep for tax and warranty reasons) will be anonymised.
For mechanics
Apply at honcarservice.co.uk/mechanic-apply. The application takes about 15 minutes — we ask about your qualifications, experience, tools, vehicle, and insurance. We aim to review every application within 5 working days.
Hon's standard platform fee is 15% of the customer's payment. This covers customer acquisition (ads, SEO), the booking system, payment processing, customer support, dispute resolution, and the 12-month warranty backing.
There's no monthly subscription, no joining fee, and no minimum number of jobs — you only pay when you earn.
Payouts run weekly. Every Monday we settle the previous week's completed jobs in a single transfer to your nominated bank account via Stripe Connect. Funds typically arrive within 1–2 business days of being initiated.
You can see exactly what's owed and when in your mechanic dashboard.
Yes. You're a self-employed contractor, so you bring your own tools, your own van or vehicle, and your own public liability insurance (minimum £2m, business cover for motor trade work).
We don't supply parts either — you source them as part of the job, and the customer's payment covers your cost plus your labour.
Yes. New jobs in your area appear as offers in your dashboard — you can accept or decline each one. You set your own availability, postcodes you cover, vehicle types and job types you'll take, and how far you'll travel. Hon never assigns work without your approval.
Customer complaints come to us first — we don't expect mechanics to handle disputes themselves. We'll review the case, contact you for your side of the story, and try to mediate. If the warranty applies, we'll arrange a return visit at no charge to the customer.
We never publish unmoderated negative reviews. Repeated patterns of complaints can lead to suspension — see the suspended account page for details.
